Have you ever found a ring with the stone missing? I will relate a story and a little advice. While out detecting with some buddies, one of them yells I found a Gold Ring !!! We all go over to look and he tells us the stone is missing. So one of the guys had a few baggies with him for finds, and after a little conversation, I told him to take the dirt from the hole with him. We took a little dirt from each of the next few holes we dug to fill the hole with the missing dirt. Well, when my buddy gets home and dumps the dirt into a strainer, and Boom!, there is the stone. He had it remounted and cleaned by a jeweler.
So if you find a ring with the missing stone, take the dirt home. The freeze and thawing of ground can loosen the settings, but the stone will still be there with the ring. Below is a picture of the ring. No it wasn't a diamond. It is a peridot which turns out was his birthstone.
