Spring is Here!!!!!
The weather is warming up and
many are getting some detecting done. Jarita and I wish you a safe and
prosperous summer of detecting. I hope you all had the time you needed to
research some great hunting spots for this summer. Many of you have purchased
new detectors for this summer. Be sure to be patient while learning your new
machines. I always suggest you dig ALL targets for at least the first set of
batteries. This will help you learn more about your new machine. I have been
out a couple times so far this spring. Nothing to much to talk about finds
wise so far. Near $16.00 in new change and a couple buffalo nickels so far. I
did have a ring that kinda got my heart pounding for a few seconds, but it
turned out to be gold plated with 10 CZ diamonds in it. I am looking forward
to hunting with some of you this summer.
In February of this year Tesoro
released a new machine called the DeLeon. It is a very easy to use Metal
detector. It has had great reviews so far. I was talking to one person today
that has detected for many years and he told me the DeLeon is the best
detector he has ever used. If you have been thinking about trying This hobby,
but were not sure about what detector to use, this is the one to try. It is
very easy to learn.
We have changed the Chat Room on
our web site. There are folks in there every evening talking about detecting,
prospecting, and generally whatever topic happens to arise. Stop in and say
Hi.
Be sure to stop by the Links page on our site.
There are many links to some great resource pages there. Also if you haven't
stopped by the Treasure Boards forum that we sponsor, be sure to do so.
Here is an interesting link for all of you who
detect and like to keep track of what you find. It is a free program called
clad counter. It was developed by Terry Bullard, and will work on all windows
programs except XP. It can be found at this URL.
April Tip
To find older coins these days
you must look beyond the normal places others have looked before. Now having
said that I also believe that no place is ever hunted out. It seems there is
always one more old coin to be found at your old hunting spots. But what about
spots that have not been hunted to death. How do I find them? What kinds of
places should I look for? Here are some ideas.
When you are at parks, most of
which have been hunted hard, hunt the edges. Most people go to the obvious
places to hunt in parks. Like the playground, or picnic areas. Look for the
least obvious place to hunt and start there. Even into the brush that grows up
around the edges. Don't forget the edges of the parking lots. Lots of things
are lost when people reach into there purses or pockets to get their car keys.
Be sure to check the sides of hills. Most people will not detect on hillsides
because it is uncomfortable. Also when you are hunting in parks, dig some of
the iffy signals. You can be pleasantly surprised by very unique finds in
parks.
Construction sites in your town.
There are sidewalks and streets being redone all the time in most towns. Now
be sure to hunt these when the work is not going on. Like on Saturday
afternoons or Sundays. Now some construction sites you will be asked to leave
due to insurance liability issues, but that is the world we live in today. Be
sure to be courteous if asked to leave.
Older school yards can be really
good places to find old coins. Most have been hunted very hard, but with
patience you can do well. Slow way down, and take your time. Remember to do
the edges of these playgrounds too. Also the front sides of the schools by the
sidewalks.
Older homes. Now these take some
work to get permission to hunt, but well worth the effort. Most
people won't go to someone's door and ask permission to hunt their yard, but
if you have the courage to do this, it can put you on some great spots that
have never been hunted. You can also gain access to some of these type places
by placing a card on grocery store boards offering assistance to find lost
items. Use your imagination and it can pay off.
There is probably many more areas
that I have missed. With research you can find old meeting areas, carnival
sites, even whole towns that are not there any more. Look beyond the obvious
places that people hunt. Just be sure to have permission before hunting, fill
all your holes, and haul off the trash you find. Always be courteous if asked
to leave a particular area. And most of all HAVE FUN!!
Thanks to all of you who have
done business with us this past month. Be sure to send in photos of your
finds, and stories of unique things that happen during your hunts.
Happy Hunting Everyone,
Doug and Jarita Heidebrink
